Health Tip of the Month

Colds and Flu

Here are some tips on how to tell the difference if you or your child has a cold or the flu..
*Both are respiratory system infections caused by viruses
*Colds usually begin slowly, 2-3 days after infection by the virus and normally last only 2-7 days
*Cold symptoms include: scratchy, sore throat, followed by sneezing and a runny nose; you may get a mild cough several days later; generally a fever is not a symptom of a cold, but if you or your child develop a fever it is usually mild
*Symptoms of the flu include sudden headache, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, fairly severe muscle aches, fatigue, and fever, sometimes up to 104 degrees F

Please check with your health care provider if you have questions about the diagnosis and treatment of these illnesses
