The Stamp Act

brandon

The stamp act was passed

The stamp act specified that Americans must buy stamps for deeds, mortgages, liquor licenses, law licenses, playing cards, and almanacs. Even newspaper editors had to buy stamps for the newspapers.

The stamp act was very unpopular with in the colonies.

The Stamp Act Congress met in New York in October 1765. It declared that

Stamp taxes could not be collected without the people’s consent. American resistance forced the British Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act in 1766.

An act for granting and applying certain stamp duties, and other duties, in the British colonies and plantations in America, towards further defraying the expenses of defending, protecting, and securing the same; and for amending such parts of the several acts of parliament relating to the trade and revenues of the said colonies and plantations, as direct the manner of determining and recovering the penalties and forfeitures therein mentioned.

Te stamp act was ordered by the British because of the Boston tea party. The Americans or the colonist did not like this act because they had to have a stamp for every thing that was made of paper like playing cards, letters, paper, and some types of cloth.
