Emancipation proclamation

Most rebuplicans believed that the Constitution protected the slaves from slavery, but some Radicals believed that after the Civil War broke out, the president had the power to end slavery.

September 17, 1862, General Robert E. Lee was defeated by George McCellan.
22 days later Lincoln delivered a speech called the Emancipation Proclamation, this proclamation said that all slaves who were in the slaves still in rebellion agianst the United States were now free on the day of January 1st,1863.
