MOCK TRIAL

7th and 8th Graders

The 10-member Mock Trial competition team from St. Joseph School began work on Sept. 7th. We practiced from 7 - 8 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 8:30 - 11:30 AM on Saturdays. We dropped the Tuesday practice sessions beginning in October, and added two all-day sessions and three Wednesday evening practices from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. This year's Iowa middle school case was a negligence civil lawsuit involving a young man who fell to his death from a roller coaster that was scheduled for demolition at a closed amusement park.

The team members were lectured by Ms. Monclova on the basics of negligence law and Mock Trial rules and procedures. The attorneys prepared and rehearsed their opening and closing statements, and their direct- and cross-examination questions. The witnesses practiced their testimonies with the attorneys. We rehearsed the entire trial many times, including a dress rehearsal in front of parents, teachers, and fellow students.

Mock Trial Results

Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team on an outstanding job at the regional competition at the Linn County Courthouse on Saturday, November 6th. The team tied for 16th place out of 30 teams. They went 1-1 in two very close trials, winning their round as the defense against a team from McKinley (117.5 - 111.5), and losing their round on the plaintiff side against a team from Regis (114 - 110). Each team member scored between 6 - 9 points out of 10 for each part of the trial in which she/he participated. This is very good. Eighth grader Kenyon Day was named Overall Best Attorney and fellow eighth grader Megan Otting was named Overall Best Witness for the St. Joseph team. Other members of our team were eighth graders Krista Pederson, Katie Weiler, and Brody White, and seventh graders Elizabeth Wilson, Sydney McCoy, Joe Beadle, Hannah Hinders, and Gary Bannister. Your coaches, parents, and the entire school are very proud of you!
