Classroom Happenings
October 2007

Preschool: As the preschool starts into October we will be continuing our farm unit. As Halloween approaches we will be learning about pumpkins and spiders. We are looking forward to the Halloween parade.

Third Grade: The third grade will be going to the Silver Pines Care Center this month for their Metro Catholic service-learning project. They will present a program of Halloween songs, poems, and riddles. They will also give the residents Halloween cards and decorations that they have made.
Working with grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters are our activities in Science.
In Reading we are enjoying the stories in Unit 2. These stories explore students' environment, from the tiny world of insects, to the vast worlds in space. In Handwriting we are having fun learning the lower case cursive letters.
In Math we are reviewing money and time. Solving number stories and adding and subtracting three digit problems will be the concepts taught in the next unit.
In Writing we are working on editing our personal narratives.
The third graders have also been keeping busy in Social Studies. The past few weeks we have done a mini unit on the American flag and have been learning map skills.
Our classes are participating in a four-part fire safety program presented by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. As a part of this program, the third grade students entered the Fire Safety Poster Contest. Sam Meyer was chosen as the winner from the St. Ludmila Center. He will receive a ride on a fire truck on October 16. Sam's poster was selected as one of the nine best fire safety posters throughout the city.

Next week we will be taking the ITBS tests.

Fourth Grade: The fourth graders have been reviewing basic multiplication and true and false number sentences in math.
In Reading, we are visualizing, learning author's purpose, and identifying cause and effect. The fourth graders are writing descriptive Halloween stories in Writing and identifying common and proper nouns.
In Science we are continuing a unit on magnetism and electricity.
We have finished a unit on rivers and will begin talking about Lewis and Clark in Social Studies.
In Religion we are continuing to practice our prayers and learning the Ten Commandments.
We will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills the week of October 15th.
