The Stamp Act

By: Addy Hoffman

Who. The American colonies were upset with the British because they put a tax on stamps in the colonies so the British can get out of debt from the French and Indian War and still provide the army with weapons and tools.

What. The outcome of the French and Indian war ended in that British was in huge debt but was in charge of America. So to help them get their money back they charged a tax on all of the American colonists. All of the colonists were mad because they thought the British Parliament shouldn’t have the right to tax them. The colonists believed that the only people that should tax them should be their own legislature. They didn’t want the British army there. And the taxes of the Stamps were only allowed to be paid in silver. The Stamp Act brought the people closer to one another. The Representatives of the nine colonies had a meeting and wrote some of the stuff they didn’t like to the British government this was called the Sons of Liberty. They wanted them to take back the law to pay taxes on stamps. When the stamped papers came the colonists started to seize the ship captains and force them to take the papers back to England. The colonists forced the stamp police to quit, because if the stamps were brought to them no one would be able to give them out. The wealthy people of the town like the idea of stopping all business that needed the stamped papers. Because it would be legal and it would come in between the business of merchants and Parliament would have to repeal the law. The lawyers and small shopkeepers and laborers didn’t want the business to stop because they would be affected by it. They wanted to pay no attention to the Stamp Act at all. The Parliament ended the Stamp Act in March 1766 but before they ended it they passed the Declaratory Act which gave the British permission to be in charge of everything in America.

When. February 6, 1765 George Grenville told the Parliament his idea to tax the colonies. On February 17, 1765 it was passed and on March 22, 1765 it was in action.

Where. Britain taxed the American Colonies.

Why. In the French and Indian war British was in debt 130,000,000 but they had to keep a army force in North America for defense and to keep political officers’ jobs. So George Grenville was in charge of what to do about paying the army and getting out of debt. George Grenville decided to start the Sugar Act and he had good income with that so he decided to start the Stamp Act to bring in more money.

How. The British won control over America after the French and Indian War. The Declaratory Act was passed that gave British control of everything that happens in the American colonies so they were allowed to tax the colonies. But the American Colonies were very upset they thought that another country shouldn’t be able to have control over them.
